Assistant Research Associate The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, known by its Spanish acronym, CIMMYT®, is a not-for-profit agricultural research for development organization with partners in over 100 countries. Please refer to our website for more information: www.cimmyt.org CIMMYT is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated, and service-oriented professional for the position of Assistant Research Associate to work in the Genetic Resources Program (GRP). The position is based at CIMMYT’s campus in Texcoco, State of Mexico, and located 45 km northeast of Mexico City, Mexico. Specific duties:  Assist the head of CIMMYT’s WGB to effectively manage the wheat collection.  Organize, and support the supervision and evaluation of field and laboratory staff and activities agreed with the head of the WGB.  Proactively identify areas for priority attention and/or improvement, in line with the ISO9001 quality management system.  Together with the head of the WGB, identify, validate and implement new approaches, methods and technologies to increase the effectiveness, and reduce costs of WGB operations.  Contribute to the management of WGB-relevant genotypic and phenotypic data in institutional databases (GRIN-Global, GeneSys, etc.).  Contribute to the implementation of a barcode-enabled system throughout WGB operations.  Assist the head of the WGB to establish and implement a strict data quality control on passport, pedigree, characterization and evaluation data. Contribute to the Open Access publishing of WGB data.  Review processes in order to ensure adherence to ISO quality standards in all operations and periodically in coordination with the supervisor, evaluate the Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure the WGB’s operating processes are working effectively and to identify areas for improvement.  Contribute to the preparation of reports to donors and management.  Assist the head of the WGB to identity, monitor and contribute to mitigating against significant risks that may affect the WGB’s mission, performance, and reputation.  Contribute to training activities and interactions with visitors, and communications mediated through the bank’s displays, internet platforms and webpages. Prepare the routine and special request reports that are required by clients and colleagues.  Provide help in the supervision and communication with the technical staff, fostering strong team spirit.  Other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Required academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:  Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy or related fields. M.Sc. (represent and advantage) in Seed Production, Seed Science, Seed Technology, or Agronomy, with at least 3 years of pertinent field or greenhouse experience.  Prior experience with wheat or barley cultivation is highly desirable.  Practical knowledge of crop management, disease recognition and phenotypic evaluation.  Advanced English and Spanish verbal and written skills.  Willingness to travel to multiple locations in Mexico, where field activities are conducted.  Must have excellent driving skills.  Ability to work in a multi-cultural, diverse workplace.  Experienced user of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.  Excellent computer skills, including an understanding of databases, and an ability to learn the software in use in the germplasm bank.  Intermediate level of English.
